Roger Hollingworth is to stand down as leader of Bromsgrove District Council after nine sometimes-controversial years in charge.

Coun Hollingworth, aged 68, says he wants to spend more time at home in Rowney Green with his wife, Jacqueline. He is also planning to stand down as councillor for his Alvechurch ward at the local elections next year.

Locally, a number of projects, including the Muga and The Lounge in Alvechurch, are unlikely to have succeeded without his help. But he has received criticism for other decisions, including his recent support for homes on the Green Belt at Hopwood.

Coun Hollingworth was elected to the district council in May 2003 and became leader in November 2005.

He was an Alvechurch parish councillor from 1997, joining after Jacqueline had told him to “stop complaining about things and do something”.

Now she’ll have him back at home again.
