Roll up for circus chaos

Panto cast

You know it’s nearly Christmas when Alvechurch Dramatic Society announces its bi-annual panto . . . this year’s offering is Orphan Belle and the Last Circus, which runs from Thursday November 27 to Saturday November 29 in Alvechurch Village Hall, at 7.30pm (plus 2.30pm Saturday matinee).

Created by Chris Davies and Paul Chamberlain, the same team who brought you Sherry Zard and The Mad Hatter, this is the tale of unfortunate orphan Belle Bottoms, who dreams of escaping life at Grimwhip’s orphanage to run away and join the circus.

Little does she know that circuses are fast dying out, due to the machinations of nasty banker Bent Barclay. As ringmaster Ringling Rose’s dwindling band of performers desperately try to put on one last show, can Belle and her friends escape the clutches of the Grimwhips and save the day?

With circus acts aplenty, an unconventional cook, a ghostly clown, two very silly posh boys and a real live gorilla (sort of), there’s plenty of traditional panto fun to be had. Tickets £7 (£6 conc) from Alvechurch Post Office, Cafe Morso, or on 0121 447 7071.

Pictured: Alan Clarke (Mr Grimwhip), Gemma Batty (Belle), Tony Godfrey (Gordon the Gorilla), Sue Resuggan (Mrs Grimwhip), Chris Tomlin (The Great Bazooka), Martin Salter (Rupert), Emily Waller (Nan), Chris Davies (Bent Barclay), Paul Birch (Ringling Rose), Jo Bestwick (Scarlet Rose).
