Sam battles her way to title

An athlete from Blackwell battled mechanical problems as well as fellow competitors to become the National Triathlon Champion.

Sam Boswell, a sports massage therapist, claimed the title for her age category after winning the Olympic-distance race held in Leicestershire.

After starting strongly in the 1.5km swim, Sam was among the first athletes at the start of the 42km bike ride. Unfortunately she experienced major problems when the back wheel of her bike locked into the frame when force was applied through the pedals, forcing the wheel on to the frame on any climbs.

Rather than abandon the race, Sam dismounted and ran, pushing the bike up the steep hills. This extra effort made the 10km run, normally her favourite element, even more tough – but despite being disappointed with her overall time, she was pleasantly surprised to find that she had still won in her age category.

As well as the National title, the result also saw Sam qualify for the 2015 European Triathlon Championships in Geneva. She has now received sponsorship from local business Elliot Nash Ltd, meaning she is able to take up her place there.

Two weeks later, Sam raced in the National Triathlon Championships at sprint distance, following up her gold medal with a silver.
