School appeal to ‘save our ape’

Posted on February 29 2016 at 2:52:14

Blackwell residents will probably recognise the ape-shaped gargoyle on the chimney of Blackwell First School, which is in need of repair.

The school is currently fundraising to restore its historic “mascot”, and potentially to have him safely housed in a glass case inside the building while a new gargoyle is commissioned for the chimney.

The ape’s exact age is unknown, but he was originally displayed on the former Dame School on Dale Hill, before being moved when the new school premises were built in 1880. Dale Hill used to be called “Ape’s Dale”, ape being a Saxon word for fern.

If you would like to donate towards the Ape Fund, please get in touch with Blackwell First School.
