School parking outcry

Poor parking

Poor parking outside village schools is becoming so dangerous that one community is planning to take its own action.

As resources for local policing shrink, and with parking control passed into the hands of the district council, residents fear the problem is only going to get worse.

In Alvechurch, the newly formed Community Safety Committee – set up by the parish council to continue the work of PACT, among other matters – met last month to consider what to do about parking in Birmingham Road outside Alvechurch Middle and Crown Meadow First schools.

Meanwhile, a resident of the Old Birmingham Road, Lickey, has sent pictures to The Village showing just how bad the problem has become outside Lickey First School, with several cars parked across the whole of the pavement (above) as parents wait for school to end.

A similar photograph of a car parked across the pavement in Alvechurch posted on Facebook caused an outcry from villagers who couldn’t believe anyone could force other pedestrians, including schoolchildren and parents pushing prams, into a busy main road.

The chairman of Alvechurch Parish Council – and former chairman of the now defunct PACT – Andy Humphries, said he would be raising the idea of a community campaign at the new safety committee, which met as The Village was going to press.

The aim would be to educate parents about how dangerous their parking could be to other people, particularly children. Such a campaign had the initial support of the police.

Meanwhile, Lickey residents are hoping Bromsgrove District Council will back up a pledge made by Coun Richard Deeming to Lickey and Blackwell Parish Council to send wardens to warn motorists about their parking on Old Birmingham Road.
