Bench and wall

Parish councillors have decided to remove a wall framing the bench sculptures on Alvechurch’s village green.

Parish chairman Andy Humphries said the wall had been vandalised by young people and the council wanted a permanent solution.

“The kids sit there, kicking it, so the suggestion is to remove it and landscape it. It will not be so attractive, but will not then be vandalised.”

The sculptures were commissioned by Alvechurch Parish Council in 2002, originally for the planned revamp of the shopping precinct.

Local artist-blacksmith Chris Yeomans enlisted the help of Year 8 pupils at Alvechurch Middle School to create designs inspired by the history of the village – and the pupils involved had their signatures engraved into the benches.

When the “Courtyard” project didn’t go ahead, the sculptures were installed on the village green.
