The modern way to worship

Members of Alvechurch Middle School’s gospel choir (above) sing out at the first “Engage” youth service in The Ark at St Laurence Church.

A congregation of 120, mostly young, people joined in with loud music and even louder videos at the service, which is intended to be a regular event.

The church’s youth worker, Gareth Howells, said: “The service was designed to appeal to young people, to create an environment in which they could comfortably learn more about the never-changing gospel of Jesus in an ever-changing world.

“We plan to have youth events every two months or so, but the Engage service takes place every Sunday evening. You could say it’s a service for the young as well as the young at heart.”

Asked why the church needed another service, Gareth said: “Engage is a more modern service, I guess, multi-media and with new songs and worship styles.

“It is very much designed to complement, not compete with, the other services that St Laurence offers.”

Engage starts at 8pm every Sunday.
