Tim’s off on Tour

Posted on May 30 2019 at 1:02:39

An Alvechurch resident is preparing for the world’s longest mountain bike race to raise funds for Cancer Research.

Tim Roberts, of Roberts Bespoke Joinery in the village centre, has challenged himself to complete the Tour Divide – a 2,745-mile race from Banff in Canada to Antelope Wells in New Mexico.

The off-road route involves 61,000 metres of vertical climbing – the equivalent of ascending Mount Everest from sea level seven times over – and follows the continental divide of the Rockies through British Columbia, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming and Colorado.

The race is unsupported, meaning participants must carry all their equipment, food and water themselves (they are allowed to resupply along the route, and can either camp or use local accommodation).

“I’ve been a keen mountain biker for the past 10 years and have gravitated towards longer and longer off-road routes,” says Tim, who will celebrate his 50th birthday during the challenge.

“I had been thinking about the Tour Divide for a number of years, and finally decided to go for it. When a friend of mine was diagnosed with terminal cancer recently, I decided to raise money for charity at the same time.”

Tim will be setting off on June 14 and aims to complete the ride in 23 days – the record is 14.
