Tree trouble

Uprooted tree

The giant tree at Alvechurch & Hopwood Cricket Club, uprooted by the February storms, remains a problem for Alvechurch Parish Council and the club because it now straddles an unknown boundary.

At the council’s March meeting, parish chairman Andy Humphries said he had contacted the Land Registry to discover the exact location of the boundary between the cricket club and The Meadows, which is under council jurisdiction, to be told it would be necessary to locate the original deed from 1918.

With the cricket season and Picnic in the Park imminent, the club had offered to begin chopping up the tree, but the council felt “a DIY approach” would be unsafe and would require the completion of a risk assessment and written permission to go on to The Meadows.

The council had received a quote for professional removal of the tree of around £5,000 and most councillors felt the cost, if agreed, should be split between both parties.

It was decided, however, that no work could be carried out until the boundary line was confirmed.
