Triathlete set for success

Posted on October 31 2016 at 2:01:07

Barnt Green elite triathlete Alex Moran will be training hard this winter after qualifying for next year’s European Duathlon Championships.

Alex, a 20-year-old law student at the University of Birmingham, trains with the university’s Triathlon Performance Team but also runs and cycles with the Barnt Green Chuggers and Chaingang.

“I started running with the Chuggers when I was 13 and then began to cycle with the Chaingang,” says Alex.

“It can be difficult to find time to train with them sometimes because we have a packed programme of around 25 hours training per week, but I like to go back when I can.”

Alex got into triathlon aged 15, after his rowing coach spotted his running prowess. This year he competed in the Swiss Pro League Race in Lausanne, the Oulton Park and Bedford Duathlons and the Leeds Abbey Dash 10k, and qualified for the European Duathlon Championships in Spain in April 2017.

Next year Alex will be racing in the Elite races at the Castle Series, as well as applying to race in the British Elite Super Series. He hopes to race in more of the Swiss Pro League, and will be looking to qualify for the World Triathlon Championships in Rotterdam in September 2017.

Alex is passionate about getting people involved in sport: “I only started running because my dad took it up and I wanted to beat him! We now go all over the country together to races, his favourite being the Great North Run.

“I would love to talk to people about getting into triathlon if they are interested, and I would definitely recommend joining the Barnt Green Chuggers and Chaingang to get into social running and cycling.

“It was the Chuggers who really got me into running and I do not think I would be doing what I am doing now if they had not been so welcoming at the beginning.”
