Unitary idea gets hearing

An initiative to get councillors to debate their own demise will be heard this month.

Coun Charlie Hotham, who is an independent parish, district and county councillor, has proposed that the district council discusses the idea of abolishing Worcestershire County Council and the six district and city councils in the county, to be replaced with one or two “unitary” councils.

Bromsgrove ran out of time to debate the motion last month, but it will be at the top of the list at the full council meeting on November 21.

Corn Hotham told Alvechurch Parish Council the county’s finances were “slowly running off the rails”.

He added: “I can’t see how they are going to get out of this situation unless there is a massive U-turn by the Government; it comes back to the idea of a unitary authority.”
