Village loses leading lights

Lorna and Jim
Alvechurch lost two village stalwarts when Lorna Sage and Jim Parker, who were both honorary Vice-Presidents of Alvechurch Village Society in recognition of their work for the community, died shortly before Christmas.

Lorna, who was 90, was tireless in her efforts in recent years to see The Meadows football pitches made playable for village youngsters, while in the early 2000s, with her sister Barbara Waller and ex-postmistress Pat Davies, she helped to compile two books on Alvechurch and surrounding villages.

Jim, who was 86, had many roles within the society and was chairman from 2002-4.

Society president Andy Humphries said: “Lorna and Jim were longstanding AVS members and true village characters who liked nothing better than rolling up their sleeves to improve the local environment.“

Right: Lorna signs copies of the first Alvechurch book in 2000, and Jim helps to plant a replacement copper beech at Sandhills Nursery last summer, donated by AVS to recognise his 40 years’ service to the society.
