Villagers rally round for Kieran

Villagers in Alvechurch have clubbed together to help a fellow resident to buy a new wheelchair.

Kieran Durrant, who is well-known in the village for his photography skills and volunteer work at The Lounge and social club, was diagnosed last year with myelopathy, spastic paraplegia and spinal atrophy – the legacy of a brain tumour when he was 11 years old.

With only a small manual wheelchair, Kieran was unable to leave the house without assistance, so he decided to ask the community for help via a crowdfunding page and social media.

“I really need a powered wheelchair that’s specially built for me, which costs around £3,000 – but they are not available on the NHS,” Kieran explains.

So far, villagers have managed to raise £3,200, meaning Kieran will soon have his new wheels and be able to resume his photography hobby and career.

“I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated – it will be great to get out and about again!” he adds.
