When village schoolgirl Ella Lead decided to raise money for Children in Need she came up with the idea of making bookmarks to sell.

More than 100 bookmarks later, the eight-year-old Crown Meadow pupil had £150 to hand over.

“I saw about it on TV and as I like reading and I like making things, the idea of bookmarks came to me,” said Ella.

She sold her creations on the counters at mum Mary’s wash and iron shop Breeze Through in Alvechurch and at village butchers Crow’s.

Meanwhile, eight Crown Meadow girls (pictured below) made good use of a teacher training day by organising a sponsored run across Alvechurch.

The route of just under a mile took them eight minutes and they raised £254 for Macmillan Cancer Research.
