In Full . . .

A big thank you!

As we celebrate our second year at the Lounge we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped and supported our project during this time.

Youth @the Lounge continues to grow and develop. It remains a positive influence in the village; offering trips, drop-in sessions, mentoring, skill development, advice and support to a range of young people across the parish.

We now have a very active Youth Management Team, who are assisting in the organisation of events and helping with our plan for future development. The young people have also agreed to write a column for this magazine, describing life in Alvechurch from their perspective, which promises to be illuminating!

Café @the Lounge also has seen an increase in popularity, which has meant that we have employed two part-time assistants, who are already making a positive contribution to our work here.

We thank all our loyal customers for helping to make it a happy, lively and friendly place to come to chat, to partake in our range of food and drinks and to use our computer facilities.

We are open to everyone on Tuesdays to Saturday from 9am until 2pm. The facility is also available to hire in the afternoons and on Saturdays and Mondays, when the café is closed.

So far we have had the NCT, a local Neighbourhood Watch group and a walkers group, to name a few, holding their meetings here. We have also run a couple of children’s parties and we are looking to develop this further.

We are also very grateful for the financial support that we have received from many local businesses, particularly Thomas Brothers and AMG garage who make a regular monthly donation, and from individuals who have generously donated money or have raised money on our behalf.

A fabulous sum of more than £400 was raised recently from the sale of The Village Walks Calendar and we would also like to offer our grateful thanks to The Village magazine for its unstinting support and for giving us a regular slot allowing us the opportunity to keep the village up to date with all that we do at the Lounge.

We do receive money from the council through a Positive Activities grant, but this only covers the cost of one youth session a week. We are offering much more and hope that we can continue to do so. It is through your wonderful support that this much has been possible.

If you feel that you would like to help, there are many ways that you can get involved. We encourage volunteers in both the café and the Youth Group. Our volunteers make an invaluable contribution to the project and are a vital element in keeping it going.

If you are a business you may like to make a one-off donation or a regular contribution – and please remember us if you are embarking on some daredevil stunt! We are also looking for more people to join our Management Committee.

The role is essentially advisory and involves a meeting every six weeks to look at ways of improving and developing the project. There is no further commitment expected.

The Lounge is a very exciting project and we aim to reach all sectors of the community; if you haven’t already, please come in and see what we are all about. You’ll be sure of a warm welcome!

Sally Meredith,
Project Coordinator, The Lounge
