A memory of WWI

Posted on August 30 2016 at 12:59:22

I am a 92-year-old WWII veteran who came to Bromsgrove in 1965 and have lived in Lickey End for a number of years.  My father joined the Royal Navy as a Boy Sailor in 1905, and left in 1945 having survived both world wars.

As part of the 100th anniversary of WWI, BBC4 showed a two-part series, Scotland’s War at Sea, which described Royal Navy actions including the early flights of bomber planes from battleships converted into aircraft carriers.

One ship shown in the film was HMS Furious, which was one of the ships my father served on as a Petty Officer gunner during WWI.
He joined the crew in July 1917 so would have been aboard for this first flight. In fact, when he married my mother in September 1918, he was wearing his HMS Furious cap, as shown in the photo.
