Childhood too testing

Posted on May 20 2008 at 11:55:23

I was one of many who toured the new school at Alvechurch and was touched by its space, colour and originality.

The children were delighted and the staff proud of their surroundings. It was a new beginning.

I asked a child who was preparing for SATs whether the new environment had helped in any way. The response was quick and pertinent.

“NO! What’s the point if having a brand new school if we still have to do tests, tests, tests and come in early for booster lessons and have no fun? It’s a waste of money!”

Out of the mouths of babes and all that, and I know there are many who feel the same. When is the Government going to stop dictating from the top and allow teachers to be professional again?

When will the state return its children to their parents? When will families be free and happy again?

When will children at Crown Meadow be as free and creative as their new building?

I am an ex-teacher who was lucky enough to start a new school with new children. Teaching them was the best job in the world.

The best thing I ever did career-wise was to go into teaching, but the second best thing was to get out!
