Homeless need our support, not cuts

Posted on March 31 2016 at 3:32:36

It’s not something we ever expected to see: someone dying cold and hungry in an Alvechurch bus shelter while we slept, well fed, in our warm houses.

But with more than 3,600 people sleeping rough every night, maybe it’s naïve to be surprised.

The Government’s figures indicate homelessness is spiralling out of control. The number of rough sleepers has increased by 30 per cent since last year with tens of thousands more people homeless.

An estimated 40 per cent of rough sleepers have mental health issues, making it doubly difficult for people to help themselves, yet welfare budgets and funding to the charity sector continue to be cut.

Isn’t it time that as a society we did more, rather than continue to cut support to people in such dire need?

I have set up a fundraising appeal for the homeless charity Crisis, in memory of the man who died. If anyone would like to donate, go to www.justgiving/kate-van-der-plank or contact me via The Village.
