Leaders needed

Posted on April 30 2018 at 12:37:40

After 12 years, I will be stepping down as leader of 1st Barnt Green Scouts, and would like to appeal for some new helpers.

I joined the leadership team to provide opportunities for village children. My aim was to put something back into the community I lived in and enjoyed – and having being a Scout, it seemed a good group to join as a volunteer.

At that time we were located in the old Guide building following the arson of the old Scout hut, and the building was in a terrible state with the floor collapsing in one corner. The lack of a sound building and loss of equipment limited the activities we could provide at that time.

Still, we managed, and after some tremendous community fundraising we moved to the New Scout and Guide Building off Blackwell Road, which serves all the groups within Scouting and Guiding. It is probably one of the best of its kind in the district and we are extremely lucky to have it.

Since moving to the new building we have seen the troop grow and develop, and with the help of volunteer and assistant leaders we have provided activities that Scouts will remember for the rest of their lives.

Scouting has changed a great deal over the years. The appointment of Bear Grylls as Chief Scout has meant an even greater focus on developing skills and confidence to take part in adventures outdoors, and challenging the Scouts physically and mentally.

Barnt Green Scouts, for example, recently returned from a trip to Amsterdam, and have in the past stayed a night on HMS Belfast in London, canoed down the River Wye, gorge-walked in South Wales, climbed Snowdon, taken a flight in a glider, undertaken night hikes, and many more things besides.

Those who get involved will, like me, find the rewards well worth the effort. There is nothing like the feeling you get when you turn an “I can’t” into a “I can” or “I have done it!”

If you would like to make a difference and have an interest in the outdoors, it would be great to hear from you. I will be around for the coming months to support any new leaders and volunteers.
