In Full . . .

Preying under protection

Your correspondent who took a photograph of a buzzard over Alvechurch asks if others have seen them.

I was watching one hover above our garden the other day, when it suddenly dropped from the sky and picked up a rabbit from the neighbouring field. It clearly had no fear of me and no interest in anything other than its prey.

Like its cousin the red kite, I wonder if its protection has made the buzzard more inclined to venture into urban areas. In the Chilterns where they were reintroduced about 20 years ago, red kites are now commonplace over towns and villages, and even turn up regularly in gardens where residents – mistakenly – leave meat and food waste for them to feed.
