The toll of time

Posted on July 01 2013 at 11:08:44

I live in London, but am related to a former resident of Alvechurch. We were interested in the article on the Bishop’s bells celebration (The Village, June 2013) and I thought people might be interested in the information below.

Congratulations on restoring the bells of St Laurence. Recently, my Mum and I were looking at old papers.

We came across a newspaper article, about my great great grandfather Austin Gwynne. We discovered from the article he was a chorister at St Laurence Church and would toll the bells at funerals for two pence an hour.

He was also a bell ringer for more than 62 years at the church and died at the age of 82 in 1958. We hope you have a wonderful bell celebration.
