In Full . . .

Where has new name come from?

Regarding your photo of the new sign for “Bob Hopping Street” (The Village July 2016). As a child growing up in Alvechurch in the 1950s, I distinctly remember that there was a road sign by the chip shop naming the alley from Red Lion Street to Bear Hill as “London Road”.

It got its name because horse-drawn coaches traveling from York to London would make their way to The Bear inn, now the black-and-white house at the top of Bear Hill, where they would spend the night before continuing their journey to London.

I have never before heard that alley called “Bob Hopping Street” and I would be interested to know when it got its new name.
