Autumn arrives early

Summer day

Alvechurch amateur weatherman Phil Thomas records the changes.

August began with warm temperatures, with maximum daytimes of 20C-plus continuing the warm summer.

However, some thundery weather and heavy rainfall of 26.4mm on the 10th saw a marked drop in temperatures.

Autumnal cooler weather then set in with a cold northerly airstream flowing down as we headed towards September.

August 2014 (to the 20th)
Mean Max   20.6C   0.7 below average
Mean Min   11.4C   0.3 below average
Mean       16.0C   0.5 below average
Rainfall     59.7mm   115% of average
Sunshine 104.7 hours 49% of average

The first half of July had near mean temperatures, with a dry and very warm end to the month.

Only 10mm of rain fell over the first two weeks, but most of the month’s rainfall fell over a 48-hour period from the 17th.

July 2014
Mean Max   23.4C   1.8 above average
Mean Min   12.6C   0.4 above average
Mean         18.0C   1.1 above average
Rainfall   58.3mm   95% of average
Sunshine 214.9 hrs 138% of average

September looks to be near normal with some pleasant sunny and dry days to look forward to.

High pressure may develop into the first weeks but after that, a return to more changeable weather seems more likely.
