Damp days and spring showers

Sunshine and clouds

Alvechurch amateur weatherman Phil Thomas records the changes.

April was rather a miserable month up to the 20th, with little in the way of any extremes. There were only a few frosty and chilly nights, and dull damp days.

Showers became more frequent towards the second half of the month, with the weather turning more spring-like into the third week.

April 2016 (to the 20th)
Mean Max   12.5C 0.3 below average
Mean Min   3.4C   0.2 below average
Mean       8.0C   0.2 below average
Rainfall     63.9mm   96% of average
Sunshine 117.9 hours 63% of average

March started off cold and wet. A very wet spell from around midnight to 8am on the 8th gave us 35.1mm of rainfall over the eight-hour period, with some localised flooding.

From the 10th to the 24th no rainfall was recorded – but then on the 27th a further 27.8mm fell. 92.5mm of rainfall was measured for the entire month, which is 206% of the local 30-year mean.

This counts as very wet!

March 2016
Mean Max   9.3C   0.7 below average
Mean Min   2.0C   0.4 below average
Mean       5.7C   0.5 below average
Rainfall   92.5mm   206% of average
Sunshine 117.9 hours 124% of average

The month ahead seems difficult to predict, with a mixture of cold episodes when the low pressure areas allow winds from the north and east.

There is a chance of a development of high pressure near to the UK, giving warmer and more settled weather – a bit more like May and spring warmth.
