Barney's Barbers

Alvechurch FC get into shape for the new season.

Alvechurch FC players and staff took the opportunity to get spruced up ready for the new season, courtesy of new club sponsor Adam Ainge – who has opened a traditional Turkish barbers in Alvechurch.

Barney’s Barbers opened in July and offers shaves, hair styling, threading, nose waxing, singeing and hot towels (as experienced by centre back Andy Parsons and Clubman of the Year Neil Tomlin, above).

Everyone at Alvechurch FC thanks Adam for his sponsorship and wishes Barney’s every success.

They may have looked great, but it was the players’ feet that did the talking in their first three pre-season friendlies, beating Tipton Town 5-0 and Hereford Lads Club 6–0 (both away games), and local rivals Bromsgrove Sporting 1–0.

The results augur well for the new season, which kicks off on August 12 with a home match against Leek Town.

A week later, qualifying for the FA Cup gets underway with Alvechurch drawn at home to the winners of the Hanley Town v Atherstone Town match in the preliminary round.

Hanley Town play in the Staffordshire County Senior League whereas Atherstone Town play in the premier division of the Midland Football League.

Meanwhile, in the preliminary round of the FA Trophy, ’Church have been drawn away to fellow Northern Premier League Southern Division side Belper. This tie will be played on Saturday October 8.

Should Alvechurch be successful, they have been drawn away to Southern League Central Division side Cambridge City in the first qualifying round, to be played on October 28.

Due to the restructuring of the non-league pyramid at the beginning of the 2018/19 season, with an extra league to fit alongside the Northern, Southern and Isthmian leagues, it means that extra promotion places are available.

Two teams from AFC’s league will be automatically promoted; the team across all step 4 leagues with the best points-per-game ratio will be promoted, and then play-off winners in each league will also be promoted.

This means that potentially, four teams could be promoted from the Northern Premier League Southern Division next season, so there is plenty to play for to capitalise on this opportunity.

* Goalkeeper Lewis Gwilliams has re-signed for Alvechurch FC and will compete with Paul Evans for the number 1 jersey.

The final player to re-sign for next season is Babucar Sauane – despite interest from three clubs higher up the non league pyramid, he decided to pledge his immediate future to the club.

However, forward Ryan Edmunds has decided to leave the club. He played a large part in ’Church’s treble-winning season but has decided to seek pastures new.

The management reacted quickly to replace Ryan by signing Yusef Cisse from Sporting Khalsa.

Sadly, utility player Mike “Magic” Wardle has been forced to retire due to a persistent ankle injury.

He has had several operations on his ankle but always struggled to recover after matches. Alvechurch FC wishes him well for the future and hope he retains his association within the club in some capacity.

Some news of a former AFC player: Omari Sterling James has signed for EFL Division 2 side Mansfield Town.

Omari, who started his career as a Birmingham City trainee before joining ’Church in the Midland Football League and scoring 11 goals in the season, then went on to play for Redditch United, Cheltenham Town, Gloucester City, and Solihull Moors.

He has also represented the St Kitts & Nevis national side. Everyone at Lye Meadow wishes him well.
