The u10s with Martin and Sam Wightman

Club Secretary Pete Gwilliam continues his series on the goals and successes of Alvechurch Lions FC.

Alvechurch Lions U10s are making steady progress this season. The nucleus of the side have now been together for three years and this is the second season under the stewardship of Alvechurch-based father and son Martin and Sam Wightman (pictured above with the U10s).

At the time of writing the team lie fourth in the Central Warwickshire Youth Football league division G, having played 12 matches, won five, drawn three, lost four. After a slow start to the season their form has really picked up and they are on a run of six matches unbeaten.

The team is run with a firm emphasis on the children playing as a team and enjoying their football, but it is always an added bonus when the hard work converts into success.

At the start of the season the team were kitted out thanks to the kind sponsorship of Miller Hughes Construction, a Warwickshire company that provides contractors to deliver high quality and professional building services throughout the local area. (The firm can be contacted on 0800 612 7701 or via http://www.millerhughes.co.uk).

The team play at Hopwood Community Centre in a small sided soccer format (7-a-side, smaller pitch) and next year will be moving up to intermediate 9-a-side football on a larger pitch.

This means there will definitely be opportunities for new players in next season’s squad, so please contact Martin to discuss the team’s training arrangements on 07766 662437.

On a wider note, the Lions are finalising their application for FA Charter Standard accreditation for a football development club, and will be launching an “introduction to football programme” for six- and seven-year-old boys and girls (school year 1).

This begins on Feb 7 in the Crown Meadow School square gym at 6.15pm and is free for the first 16 children who reserve their place (email club secretary, .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address))

Finally, the Lions will call an EGM at the beginning of February to gain members’ approval for its planned partnership with Alvechurch Football Club. This will open up further opportunities for sport in the Alvechurch community and provide all local footballers with a pathway through junior and youth football into the Midland Football Alliance and beyond.

AFC has a good pedigree when it comes to producing players who go on to play at higher levels of the game, such as David Kelly, Sean O’Driscoll and, of course, Alan “Smudger” Smith.
