A Finstall couple who decorate their entire house and garden with Christmas lights every year have now raised around £25,000 for two local charities.

Malcolm and Wendy Molloy’s Alcester Road home has become famous in the Bromsgrove area since they began the tradition eight years ago, with visitors turning up in their droves to view the impressive display.

This year’s efforts alone raised £2,300, contributing to the grand total of £25,000 and bringing great pleasure to thousands of children and adults.

“It started out as a hobby, but people kept suggesting that we put a charity box outside,” says Malcolm. “So I registered with Birmingham Children’s Hospital and the Primrose Hospice – they are both local and are charities that most people can relate to.”

The display, which has a different theme each year and now uses 50 amps, takes from four to six weeks to set up, but it’s always complete by December 1 for the big switch on.

The next-door neighbours also help out, while Malcolm’s employers, Leisure Support Services at Edgbaston Cricket Ground, support the venture with equipment and man power if needed.

“I love doing the display and will carry on as long as possible – it’s not a obsession, just a great joy to see all the faces walking round the garden,” says Malcolm.

“It’s also a great talking point and we get to meet all kinds of generous people. We would like to thank everyone for all their support over the years.”
