It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. . . well, it is in The Village headquarters at any rate, where the decorations are already up and the festive songs have been blasting out (much to the despair of the Office Grinch!).

Outside our window, the Christmas tree donated by those kind folks at Littleheath Garden Centre has taken pride of place in the centre of Alvechurch, while Barnt Green is also looking the part with lights adorning all the shops and a lovely tree provided by Oasis Flowers & Balloons.

Reading this in early December, you might be tempted to grumble that Christmas starts earlier and earlier these days – but why not surrender to the magic of Yuletide and take a look at some of our local businesses who are waiting to help you make this Christmas and New Year extra-special.

The holiday season is all about celebrating with friends and family, and where better to meet up with loved ones than one of the cosy pubs on our doorstep?

The Coach & Horses at Weatheroak has some great-value festive menus as well as excellent beer, and a special discount voucher for Village readers can be used right up until the end of February!

The Swan in Alvechurch is the ideal location for letting your hair down over the party season, with plenty of live music and disco nights plus a champagne and fireworks extravaganza on New Year’s Eve.

And The Crown at Withybed Green is open every day over Christmas and New Year (check advert for specific times), and will host the popular annual Morris dancing display on New Year’s Day.

If you’ve got a busy social calendar lined up, why not let our local beauty experts help you to look fabulous?

Bliss Hair Therapy in Alvechurch can create party makeup as well as hairstyles – check out the brand new L’Oreal hair chalks! – and there are also loads of gift ideas such as styling products and GHD gift sets.

Meanwhile. talented stylist Louise Mitchell, formerly of @15, has moved to Barnt Green and is offering her loyal customers a special deal on all appointments booked before Christmas.

With hair and makeup complete, it’s time to accessorise – and long-established jewellers RF Collyer of Rubery provides a wealth of top quality gold and silver jewellery to complement any outfit and suit any taste.

There are also watches and keepsake gifts such as pens, jewellery boxes, lighters and hip flasks, which would make lovely presents for someone special.

If you’re choosing a gift for someone who seems to have everything, or is difficult to buy for, how about giving them their very own photo shoot? Party Portraits, a mobile photography studio based in Alvechurch, is offering a one-hour session for £60, which includes a free CD of the images.

Still on the subject of gifts, Tony’s Handyman in Barnt Green has a fantastic choice of homeware from leading brands such as KitchenCraft, Aga and Le Creuset – perfect for anyone who loves cooking and entertaining.

You’ll also find a selection of hardware and DIY items to help you tackle any household jobs over Christmas, . . and if it should snow (fingers crossed, for those who love the white stuff!) then there’s a range of sledges and shovels.

If you haven’t got round to buying your Christmas tree yet, there’s a great choice at Littleheath Garden Centre (such as the specimen donated to Alvechurch, pictured right with Liz Fraser of Littleheath).

The Lickey End centre also offers plenty of other plants and flowers plus artificial trees, as well as a wide range of decorations, home and giftware.

Meanwhile, Oasis Flowers & Balloons in Barnt Green is offering a 10 per cent discount on all Christmas trees, and the shop stocks all manner of festive foliage plus a variety of balloons for all occasions.

If you’re seeking an unusual present for a book-lover, the latest offering by an Alvechurch couple could be just the trick.

UFO researchers John Hanson and Dawn Holloway have just published an eighth volume in their fascinating Haunted Skies series, which aims to record the entire history of British UFO sightings since 1940.

The 550-page book, which covers the events of 1980, is available on Amazon from £18.07.

Whatever your plans are – have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
