Following on from our Burcot Forge feature last issue, we take a closer look at one of the businesses operating from the site.

If you have trouble finding that special outfit in the High Street shops, or simply love the idea of wearing something truly unique, it’s well worth making a visit to dressmaker Jane Morriss at Burcot Forge.

Jane designs and creates beautiful occasion wear, with each hand-cut garment made to clients’ individual measurements. This service is especially helpful for weddings, with many brides struggling to find their “dream” dress in bridal boutiques.

Jane and her two part-time assistants also cater for bridesmaids of all ages, plus the mother-of the bride, for whom it is especially important to have a unique outfit.

“You don’t want to find that another guest has the same outfit as you!” she points out.

Jane offers a selection of wedding accessories like tiaras, shoes and even designer silver jewellery created by her partner.

But it’s not only bridal parties who benefit from her expertise – she also designs a range of occasion wear such as ball gowns and cocktail dresses, plus everyday wear.

“Some people come with their own designs, which I can interpret, and some bring their own fabric for me to use,” Jane explains.

She has hundreds of fabric samples for clients to browse, and generally sources material from wholesalers.

After 14 years at these premises, Jane has recently expanded the business into the spacious top floor of the building.

She already has a large base of regular clients who appreciate the high standard of workmanship, and has recently been working on a more unusual commission – ballet costumes for a kids’ show at the Palace Theatre in Redditch.

Jane will soon be passing her skills on to others through dressmaking workshops. If you are interested in attending, call her on 01527 574568.
