Writing this on a perfect autumn day, Christmas seems quite a long way off. . . but it won’t be long before the season of goodwill is upon us once more, and the excitement is already building as local organisations and businesses gear up to help us celebrate the festive fiesta!

By the end of this month, our villages and towns will be decked out with sparkling lights – Alvechurch will have another wonderful Christmas tree kindly donated once again by Littleheath Garden Centre, while Barnt Green’s centrepiece is being given by Oasis Flowers & Balloons.

The big Christmas Light Switch On Event in Bromsgrove will take place on Saturday November 23, from 3.30–5.30pm outside the Golden Cross pub in the town centre.

And Rubery will flick the switch a week later on Saturday November 30 from 4–5.30pm, in the public car park next to the Co-op supermarket. Both events will feature a fun-packed programme of entertainment from local entertainers.

Once you’ve been inspired by the municipal extravaganzas, it’s time to think about filling your own home (and office) with the spirit of Christmas, and there are plenty of outlets locally where you can find everything you need.

As well as providing the tree for Barnt Green, Oasis Flowers & Balloons – located on Hewell Road – is offering a 10 per cent discount on all Christmas trees, which will be in stock from the last weekend in November.

The shop will also be stocking all manner of festive foliage to brighten your home or to give as a gift, plus a variety of balloons for all occasions.

Littleheath Garden Centre in Lickey End will also have a wealth of Christmas trees to choose from, whether you prefer the real or plastic variety – and again, there are plants and flowers to suit all tastes.

The centre also offers a wide range of decorations, home and giftware, and you can see it all for yourselves (and pick up a bargain) at the Christmas Shopping Extravaganza on Wednesday November 20.

Hopwood Garden Centre has a great selection of Nordmann non-drop trees which will make life easier over the Christmas season, and plenty of other plants as well as expert advice.

The forecasters don’t seem to have made up their minds on whether we’ll be getting a snowy winter, but don’t forget that Hopwood sells winter salt to help keep your driveways and paths safe.

Back in Barnt Green, quality non-drop trees are also available from Cofton Church Lane as of November 23, with free local delivery and even a free baby tree for the kids!
So, your home is now looking beautifully festive. . . but what about your good self?

Christmas is all about sparkle, and not just on the tree – so if you need a bit of bling to complement that new outfit, head down to Cupitts in Bromsgrove where you’ll find a fabulous range of contemporary jewellery.

The long-established family-run shop has just been refurbished and now stocks some great new brands – and if you’re buying for someone else, the team will be happy to gift-wrap those special items for free.

More lovely jewellery can be found at RF Collyer in Rubery, which has been in business since 1948 and has an excellent reputation. As well as quality gold and silver jewellery, the shop offers watches and keepsake giftware such as pens, jewellery boxes, lighters and hip flasks.

With the party season about to get underway, a bit of pampering might be in order – and our local beauty therapists would love to help you look your best!

Alvechurch salon @15 is offering a special Christmas party package comprising party hair and Shellac nails, and Beauticle of Barnt Green has a special offer on Shellac or Calgel nails and a Sienna spray tan to brighten up that winter skin.

As well as creating your party hair and makeup, Bliss Hair Therapy in Alvechurch has lots of gift ideas to help you have a stress-free run-up to Christmas.

There’s currently a “buy one get one free” offer on all styling products, and there are some fabulous GHD gift sets in stock – and don’t forget the gift vouchers.

Once you’ve got yourself ready for Yuletide, why not organise a get-together with family or friends before everyone gets too busy?

The Coach & Horses pub at Weatheroak is a wonderfully cosy place to celebrate, and the special festive menus are great value.

And there are benefits to being the organiser – you’ll get a voucher for a free two-course meal for two if you bring a party of 10 or more to eat from the Christmas menu!

*  If you still haven’t quite slipped into the festive mood, just visit one of our local Christmas fairs – first up is Alvechurch Village Hall on Saturday November 16 from 2–4pm, when the cosy hall will be packed with friendly stalls selling craft items from cards and decorations to woodturning and jewellery.

The refreshments, which include hot mince pies, sausage rolls and mulled wine, will definitely make you feel Christmassy!

Alvechurch Middle School has its annual Christmas Craft Fair on Saturday November 30 from 12–3pm, with craft stalls, Christmas singers and a grand prize draw, while Holy Trinity Church Lickey hosts a Christmas Fair with second hand book sale on Saturday December 7 from 11am– 2pm.

And don’t forget to go and have your photo taken in Nativity costume at Alvechurch Baptist Church, also on December 7 from 1–4pm! See What’s On for details.
