Potting Shed

Many readers will be familiar with Singletons Nurseries at Lydiate Ash, which has been supplying top quality home-grown plants and produce for almost 70 years – and now the family-run business has another string to its bow in the shape of an on-site restaurant.

The Potting Shed opened in April and has proved a big success, serving afternoon tea, breakfast, lunch and snacks in an attractive atmosphere.

Decorated in pastel shades with vintage furniture and pretty flowers, the spacious wooden building also boasts a large outdoor seating area, all within the nursery’s secluded setting.

The extensive menu features everything from homemade cakes, smoothies and Churchfields ice cream to fish and chips, steaks and even Sunday roasts.

Fresh local produce is used wherever possible, and eggs from the resident hens and ducks are available to buy.

The Potting Shed is launching a new evening dining experience from September 17.

On Friday and Saturday nights, the restaurant will be transformed with white tablecloths, gleaming tableware and candlelight, for customers to enjoy a special menu created by experienced chef Ben Middlehurst.

The venue also runs monthly theme nights, with a 1940s event coming up on September 30, plus an Italian night, a soul music special, and Christmas and New Year’s Eve celebrations on the calendar.

Live acoustic music accompanies the Sunday lunches, and customers can bring their own alcohol to enjoy with a meal. Don’t forget to pop along for a BBQ on Bank Holiday Monday, August 29!

The Potting Shed is available for exclusive hire and has already hosted a baby shower and a 90th birthday. Children’s parties are welcome, and there are plans to create a “fairy hollow” in an adjacent building – this will also be used as a grotto at Christmas. There’s also a catering service.

As well as plants and gardening accessories, Singletons now offers a huge range of giftware in a cosy shop adjoining the restaurant. You’ll find kitchenware, ornaments, jewellery, local jams and chutneys, greetings cards and giftwrap.
