The Village area is packed with ways to make this Christmas extra-special.

With weather forecasters predicting snow as we write this, it’s even easier to get into the Christmas spirit a little early – not that we Villagers need any encouragement!

This is always our favourite edition to produce, from the faces on the front cover to the festive-looking adverts to the packed What’s On section.

And the calendar is filling up with special events to get the season underway. From our window we can see the Alvechurch village Christmas tree, due to be lit up on November 29 – what it lacks in stature it will surely make up for in sparkle, with unusual decorations provided by the local WI.

Next to get its glow on is Barnt Green, which will host a repeat of last year’s successful Barnt Green Lights Up! event on Friday December 4.

It all starts at 5pm in Millennium Park with carols and a short service led by Revd Rob Fieldson, before the jingle of bells heralds the arrival of a certain Mr Claus.

Santa will switch on the lights before leading a procession through the village to St Andrew’s First School, with youngsters proudly holding homemade lanterns aloft.

Everyone is welcome at the school’s free Christmas Fair, which promises fun for all the family. Some of the village shops will be also staying open late for your Christmas shopping needs.

On the same evening it’s Blackwell’s turn to launch its festivities, with the lights switched on at 5.30pm at The Wheel, St Catherine’s Church.

This event will also feature the prize-giving for Lickey & Blackwell Parish Council’s annual Christmas competition, and villagers are all invited to attend Blackwell First School’s Christmas Fair from 6.30pm – treats include pork baps, mulled wine and mince pies, nail painting and the opportunity to have your picture taken with Santa.

As we went to press we were waiting for full details on Lickey’s light-up event, with prize-giving, the big switch-on and Santa in attendance – you can check the time by emailing .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)

Later in December there’s the inaugural Christmas Tree Festival at Alvechurch Baptist Church – click here for a full timetable of events.

And Avoncroft Museum in Bromsgrove will be celebrating Christmas traditions with various activities.

With all these exciting festivities to attend, you’ll need to be super-efficient to make sure you’re prepared for Christmas – and that means using tried-and-trusted local businesses to provide the essential ingredients.

Whether you put your tree up at the end of November or wait until a few days before Christmas, you’ll find a lovely selection of real trees at Hopwood Garden Centre, including Nordmann “non-drop” to make life that bit easier! All sizes can be netted for easy transport.

Nordmann “Non-Drop” trees are also available from Cofton Church Lane, and with sizes from 4ft upwards there’s something to suit all homes! There’s free local delivery and you’ll even get a free decoration for your child when you purchase your tree.

For trees real or artificial, and all the decorations to dress them, head for Littleheath Garden Centre, where you’ll also find a large range of giftware. The centre is running Elf Hunts daily, and of course there’s Santa’s Grotto.

Further festive foliage can be found at Oasis Flowers & Balloons, where orders are being taken for bespoke Christmas wreaths and centrepieces – and the shop also boasts a range of handmade chocolates and other gifts.

If your family and friends enjoy cooking and baking, Tony’s Handyman provides loads of great gift ideas, from oven gloves to cheese plates, and don’t forget that you can also stock up on DIY essentials such as bulbs for fairy lights!

Christmas cooking can all get a bit much, however, so a trip to a local hostelry might be in order for a bit of respite. The Crown at Withybed Green will be open as usual on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day, plus 11am–3pm on Christmas Day itself – and there are New Year’s festivities too.

Blackwell Club also offers festive family fun including music from Blackwell Concert Band on Christmas Eve and a “Smarty Party” on New Year’s Eve!

And if you are hosting your own party, you can buy your beer from Bromsgrove’s own Bird’s Brewery, where mini-kegs and gift packs are also available.

Speaking of parties, if you need to get glammed up then pay a visit to Bliss Hair Therapy – as well as hair and makeup, there are plenty of beauty gifts to treat someone special.

Finally, take a look at Coconut Pink’s website to find affordable jewellery gifts with vintage and contemporary beads.

However you celebrate the season, we at The Village hope you all have a fabulous time!
