After hitting an all-time high of £20,000 a few years ago, the average cost of a wedding has dropped significantly in the wake of the financial crisis, with many couples looking for ways to lower the cost without compromising on their dream day.

There are of course lots of ideas for saving money, such as creating your own favours and stationery, asking a family member or friend to bake the cake, or foregoing some of the “extras” like balloons, chair covers and fireworks – but there are certain essential elements that you just can’t do without.

Unless you happen to live in a very large home with plenty of land (in which case you may not be on such a tight budget anyway!), you’ll need to book a venue for your ceremony and/or reception. While some couples choose to hire a local village hall, remember that this option potentially gives you and your family a lot more work to do – for instance, you’d have to organise the catering and decorations yourselves and clear up afterwards, and the last thing you want to do is create extra stress!

CAKE!

The advantage of having your wedding at a hotel, restaurant or golf club is that it will have the capability to cater for large numbers of people, and most venues employ dedicated wedding co-ordinators or event managers to ensure everything runs smoothly. Plus, the hotel option means you don’t have to worry about accommodation for guests.

Set in the stunning Lickey Hills but surprisingly close to Birmingham, Hillscourt is a particularly good choice for a wedding. It’s licensed for civil ceremonies, allowing you to have the wedding and reception all under one roof, and the attractive grounds and gardens are ideal for the photographs. The excellent catering, fully licensed bar and 55 contemporary en-suite bedrooms are further reasons to consider Hillscourt.

Meanwhile, also in the foothills of the Lickeys, the Old Rose & Crown is also one of the most popular wedding venues in the area. It’s licensed for civil weddings or traditional receptions for up to 140 guests, and you are assured of exclusive use of the hotel as only one wedding is booked on any given day. For a closer look, pop along to the Open Day on Saturday February 12 to see the hotel dressed for a wedding.

Down the road at Weatheroak is Kings Norton Golf Club, a Grade II listed building set in beautiful parkland, with many years’ experience in catering for weddings. The venue offers excellent food, friendly efficient staff and a very professional approach to your individual requirements. The ballroom suite can hold up to 200 seated diners and has a large dance floor with private bar. You can check KNCG out for yourself at its Wedding Fayre on Sunday February 5.

Another essential part of the perfect wedding is the outfits, and Continental Collection in Barnt Green offers a wealth of choice for fashion-conscious wedding participants, not to mention the guests.

Designer occasionwear from the likes of Ian Stuart, John Charles and Joseph Ribkoff provides great options for mothers of the bride, while brides themselves may also choose to eschew the traditional white gown in favour of smart and colourful separates.

Glamorous brides could also opt for a stunning colourful gown from the boutique’s vast collection of evening and prom wear, while bridesmaids are spoilt for choice with stylish dresses in every colour of the rainbow.

Some gowns are also available to hire, as are the superb hats – and there are plenty of beautiful accessories to complement whichever outfit you choose.
All the women involved in a wedding will be keen to look their absolute best, and two local business are on hand to assist.

Bliss Hair Therapy in Alvechurch can help you add some extra glamour to the big day with various wedding packages, including GreatLengths hair extensions, eyelash extensions and makeup, while Beauticle in Barnt Green offers a range of treatments such as Sienna X spray tanning and the extremely popular Minx, Calgel and Shellac nails.

Jewellery is another essential component, from the engagement ring which begins the whole process to the jewellery worn on the big day itself. RF Collyer of Rubery has more than 60 years of experience and is ideally placed to help you choose the perfect pieces, including precious metals, fashion items and watches.

The shop also stocks a wide selection of giftware such as photo frames and pens – these would be great for thanking those special people who have helped make the day such a success. Plus, if you want to wear a vintage item, perhaps a family heirloom, remember that RF Collyer can also handle repairs, alterations and rethreading of beads and pearls.

If your preference is for hand-crafted jewellery, check out Coconut Pink of Blackwell – the limited edition fashion pieces are created using contemporary and vintage beads and charms, with commissions taken for special gifts and occasions.

Various styles of necklace, bracelet and earrings can be made in virtually any colour to match a specific outfit, and the popular charm bracelets would make lovely presents for younger bridesmaids.

Finally, once the elements of your dream wedding have all come together, you’ll want to record those special memories to be kept forever – and Cherished Productions of Bromsgrove offers a full video and photography service at “sensible and affordable” prices.

Video filming is performed in full high definition and edited to the highest standards, and a musical soundtrack of your choice is then added to the highlights. Depending on the package you book, Cherished Productions can record the full wedding ceremony as well as the speeches, the cake cutting ceremony, the first dance and highlights of the evening celebrations.
