A big thank you from Rectory Cottage

Many thanks to all who came to our open garden at Rectory Cottage, Old Rectory Lane, Alvechurch, on June 7, writes Celia Hitch.

The rain stopped at just the right time, the sun came out, and we had so many enthusiastic and charming visitors. We enjoyed a wonderful afternoon, the cakes, scones and teas went down well; my daughter Vicky and son Andrew and wife Amanda were great in the kitchen, along with Joyce, Betty, Felicity, Andrea, Annette, Jill and John. Thanks to all of them and to all the kind people who donated home made cakes.

There were so many flattering comments about the garden, particularly my late husband Steve’s water garden, completed by my younger son Nick. Although it had been hard work completing everything in time (Nick was valiantly cutting the grass in the pouring rain on that Sunday morning) everything came together.

The site was tidied up in torrential rain on Saturday, Nick was helped out by friend Brian who, incidentally, managed to slip into the river and go for a swim. It caused great hilarity, but he was soaking wet anyway. Richard Williams, Nick’s work mate, put in a lot of effort too.

What a successful day! Steve would have been proud. We raised an amazing £1,150 for NGS, and a further £117.00 for Macmillan Cancer Support after opening the garden on June 4 for Rowney Green Horticultural Society. Many, many thanks to all of you.
