Village care home unveils vibrant new garden to help residents enjoy time outdoors.

The Lawns care home in Alvechurch has always ensured that residents have plenty to see and do – and now they can keep their minds stimulated outdoors too, with the installation of a new sensory garden.

The original idea for the garden came from a training session hosted by The Lawns’ care manager, Chris Caldicott. She set the staff a task to plan and create a sensory area for the residents in a relatively unused area of the terraced courtyard.

The project was led by one of the team leader staff, Bryan Madamba – who, overseen and guided by Chris, helped all the staff at The Lawns to come together and get inspired to create it.

The sensory garden has been carefully and meticulously planned not only to look beautiful but also, as the title suggests, to appeal to all the senses.

Residents can touch and smell a variety of flowers and herbs as well as hearing the sounds of wind chimes in the air and running water from the wishing well.

The area also has a variety of more unusual features including a Buddha sitting atop some logs, and a pair of cockerels!

The sensory garden is further enhanced by an inviting arch-way leading to its very own “yellow brick road”, which enables those with limited vision to move around the features.

All of the plant beds, pots and the benches are painted in vibrant colours.

Bryan commented: “We are all very proud of what we have achieved, and although I was a little nervous to begin with about leading the project, everyone got involved and brought ideas.

“We have also had wonderful support from the residents and their families to help create it.

“I’m particularly proud of the herb garden that I made from an old wooden crate!

“Now that summer has arrived, it’s lovely to see our residents walking around the sensory garden and to realise how it has enhanced their ability to enjoy the outdoors.”

Residents can also stroll around the secluded grounds of The Lawns, and enjoy tea on the patio if weather permits.

Meanwhile, the inside of the home is full of inventive features such as brightly-coloured murals recalling trips to the seaside, a woodland-themed corridor, and an “indoor street” of traditional shop fronts to help residents reminisce.
