The department has been at the heart of Little Heath since 1985, and has expanded enormously since that time – these days it boasts more than 170 aquariums and cold water tanks, and the staff have a real passion for all things aquatic.
“All the staff are fish owners themselves, with some of us owning up to four tanks,” says Jack Brookes, who has been Head of Aquatics at Little Heath for the past year and has plenty of previous experience working in aquatics stores and departments.
The choice of tropical fish available runs from the well-known neons, guppies and gouramis right through to more unusual species like cichlids and axolotl, plus blue lobsters, crabs and turtles and a dedicated discus tank. Regular deliveries from around the world (Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Germany, Colombia, Czech Republic) means it’s highly likely that specific fish can be ordered upon request.
The indoor coldwater section is currently being updated and should be ready in the next couple of months. Meanwhile, Little Heath stocks an excellent range of aquarium tanks from the small starter kits to tanks up to 200+ litre capacity.
With the pond season in full swing, the department’s pond area has been given a makeover to show off the vast selection of products. As well as a 2,000 gallon koi pond, there are more than 30 water features on display, plus a huge range of plants to suit any type of pond – up to 70 varieties (if not more) from floating plants to deep water marginals. Lighting, pumps, filters and ornaments are also available, and Little Heath is a 5-star stockist for OASE and Hozelock.
On-site water testing is provided, free of charge, for any pond or aquarium at any time on any day. And customers should look out in store for monthly special offers on various products.
This year brings some exciting news for customers, with the development of a pet department alongside Aquatics. Little Heath is already stocking the James Wellbeloved range of top quality cat and dog food, while chicken feed and runs are available to order in any size. There are plans to introduce livestock later in the year.
