Spring is in the air at last, and for keen gardeners, lawn care will be high on the agenda. Whether you’re looking after your own back garden or a public facility, it’s well worth paying a visit to North Worcestershire Lawn & Garden Equipment, where you’ll find the best quality equipment from a range of top manfacturers.

The Tardebigge-based business, which was founded by George Richardson just over a year ago, is celebrating its first birthday with the unveiling of a brand new showroom, allowing customers to see exactly what’s on offer.

The client base is largely made up of professional gardeners, groundsmen for local cricket and football clubs, and homeowners with a large area of lawn to care for – in short, those who are looking for more specialised equipment than you’d find in a regular DIY store.

“As well as selling brands like Hayter, Murray and Flymo, we are a Masport dealership and an official service agent for Briggs & Stratton,” says George, who originally housed the firm in a small unit at The Barns before its success forced an expansion into the current premises, just a stone’s throw away on the same site.

Having gained an NVQ and City & Guilds qualification in horticultural engineering from Evesham College, George worked for several garden machinery importers and dealers, before taking a hiatus to follow his other passion: cycling. He raced with semi-professional teams in Belgium and France, and even competed with Team GB before coming back to Britain and gardening.

“I realised I wanted to be my own boss,” he grins, ”so I decided to set up NWL, and happily I was soon getting word of mouth recommendations.”

He quickly built up a reputation with the leading manufacturers, and stocks a far wider selection than most dealers – as well as being able to source most items overnight.
NWL specialises in ride-on tractor mowers, and also sells tractors with trailer attachments which horse-owners use to care for their paddocks, plus industrial equipment including diggers, farm machinery and chainsaws.

George offers repairs and servicing to all makes and models, and makes chainsaw blades to order. The new showroom, which is separated from the workshop area, will display additional items such as hand gardening tools and oak flower tubs.

When he’s not running NWL, he cycles with professional outfit Pendragon Sports Colnago Le Col (“a bit of a mouthful!” he remarks), which will compete in various events in the UK and abroad during 2010 – look out for him when a city-centre race in Tewkesbury is televised on ITV4 on June 1!
