Memories of change in the Lickeys

Posted on May 19 2009 at 2:14:02 1 comments

Lickey resident Janey Hewitt set out some time ago to preserve memories of the area through a series of recorded interviews with village people.

She has now embarked on the publication of these interviews in booklet form, the first of which is The Life and Times of Dr Cathleen Elliott MBE.

The booklet tells how Dr Elliott, who became a Bromsgrove GP, spent most of her childhood at Chadwich Manor, on the western edge of the Lickey Hills, before moving to Monument Lane, at the top of them, in 1953.

There are lots of fascinating details from her childhood and observations of the changes to the area, particularly from the construction of the M5 and M42.

“I walked through the wet in the ‘Ban the M42’ procession with a big placard,” remembers Dr Elliott.

The booklet also follows Dr Elliott’s medical career and the innovations that enabled her to better care for patients.

The Life and Times of Dr Cathleen Elliott MBE is available at £3.50 from Lickey Post Office and Lickey Information Centre or by contacting Janey at Monument Books, 17 Monument Lane, Lickey, Birmingham B45 9QQ Tel: 0121 453 2310 or see: www.monument-books.co.uk

Do you have any maps of the Lickey Tram turning circle,my friend who is a tram enthusiast like me,is hoping to build a model of this turning circle, but hasn’t any luck of where to find a map.
He and his wife come from the Westbrom area and moved to Thornton Cleveleys about six to eight years ago.
He ordered a tram book off the internet from a well known publisher and from what I believe it has got lost in the post and this is the only book the publisher had and this had the map of Lickley turning circle in.
  Hope you can help.
      Regards.

Hi Stuart - there’s a pic of the Rednal Tram Terminus on page 195 of Hail Salubrious Spot, a book recently published by Gavin Bantock about life in and around Barnt Green 60 years ago.
It also appears, we think, in a book called something like Postcards from the Lickeys, by Joe Brennan, of Cofton Collections.
Hope that helps.

Ed
