A look back at what was going on around here in May 2004. . .

Our May 2004 cover marked the 75th anniversary of Alvechurch Village Hall, showing the golden key that had been presented at the opening in 1929.

Inside, we told how the building of the hall was a real community effort.

IN THE NEWS: More than 100 people attended a public meeting to protest over plans for a rendering plant in Hopwood, and were surprised to hear that Bromsgrove District Council had already issued a “certificate of lawfulness”.

Meanwhile, the new roundabout in Burcot, at the bottom of Greenhill, was causing consternation – Lickey and Blackwell parish councillors called it “confusing and dangerous”.

Wendy and Jim

* Barnt Green residents Wendy and Jim Tricklebank were singled out for recognition for their maintenance of Greenbank, between the last house and the railway bridge on Hewell Road.

The county council was so impressed that it donated bulbs and shrubs.

* Marlbrook author Theo Theobald had co-written a new book, Shut Up And Listen!, subtitled The Truth About How to Communicate at Work.

It was largely written in Cafe & Deli on the Green in Barnt Green, over cups of his favourite Italian coffee.
