Cover Feb 05

A look back at what was happening around here in February 2005.

The cover of our February 2005 issue depicted a snowy scene on Bear Hill, Alvechurch.

IN THE NEWS:
Police were urging Barnt Green residents to help track down the gang who abducted a woman in the village before burgling her home.

She was snatched as she returned to Victoria Mews and held in a van while the three men ransacked her property, before being driven off and eventually dumped out in Handsworth.

Cofton fundraisers

* Villagers had been busy fundraising for victims of the Boxing Day tsunami.

A group of Cofton Hackett youngsters (above) raised £550 with a coffee and mince pie party, while a bring-and-buy sale at Tardebigge Community Hall raised money for the Aqua Box programme, which sends basic supplies to disaster areas across the world.

Meanwhile, Cofton resident Michelle Mills, who was in Thailand when the tsunami struck, wrote about her terrifying experience.

Bekkyi and group

* Youth worker Bekkyi Reacord, who had been at the forefront of recent youth initiatives in the area, received the Alvechurch Young Achievers Award from parish councillor Pete Smith, watched by members of the new Tuesday youth group.
