A look back at what was happening around here in December 2005.

We produced a combined November/December issue in 2005, so readers had two months in which to identify all our “cover stars”!

Eleven possible sites for affordable housing in Alvechurch were to be put to public consultation following a local housing needs survey carried out by the parish council.

Elsewhere, village MP Julie Kirkbride was leading a campaign against plans for health cuts of up to £30 million, including potential closures of departments at the Alexandra Hospital in Redditch.

Andy and pals

* December 2005 marked one year since Alvechurch teen Andy Perrygrove was hit by a van and left with acquired severe brain injury.

His family told The Village how friends and neighbours had provided massive support, including the setting up of “Andy’s Fund” to raise money for Andy’s ongoing care.

* The restoration of Belvedere Lodge in Barnt Green revealed an unexpected discovery: a poem inscribed on a wall in the former smithy, seemingly written by a Victorian stable boy and hidden behind a staircase for many years.

The property’s owner reproduced it as a mural.
