A musical treat for Barnt Green

The orchestra

On July 6, St Andrew’s Church in Barnt Green hosts the Sinfonia of Birmingham for another evening of orchestral music.

Founded in 1993, the Sinfonia has established itself as a leading chamber orchestra in the West Midlands. While performing under a professional conductor and leader, many of the players follow careers outside music.

The Sinfonia enjoys close links with the CBSO orchestra, many of whose leading players have performed concertos with the Sinfonia.

Traditionally, the orchestra receives enthusiastic support in Barnt Green, not least because a number of the players come from the surrounding area, including clarinettists Alastair Moseley, Tom and Bob Porter, violinist Cathy Moseley, and cellist Olivia Goodborn.

Alastair and Cathy are also the founder members of Bromsgrove’s Orchestra of St John, which has just returned from an Italian tour – their leader and soloist in the Bruch Violin Concerto was Alvechurch resident and CBSO violinist Byron Parish.

In the Barnt Green concert, Tom Caldecote will perform Gerald Finzi’s Clarinet Concerto. The Sinfonia is delighted to renew its partnership with Tom, who is co-principal clarinet in the Southbank Sinfonia.

Tom has extensive professional experience including performances with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the CBSO, the Britten Sinfonia, the Orchestra of the Swan, the British Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, the Birmingham Opera Company, the Heart of England Orchestra and the Midland Sinfonia.

The conductor will be Daniele Rosina, who studied clarinet and conducting at Birmingham Conservatoire where he was awarded the conducting prize for four consecutive years. He has since worked with many professional orchestras including the San Francisco Ballet and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

The programme will also include Mozart’s Overture to the Marriage of Figaro, his wonderful Symphony No 35 (“Haffner”) and Haydn’s Symphony No 88.

The concert begins at 7.30pm on Saturday July 6 at St Andrew’s Church, Barnt Green (B45 8NR).

Tickets on the door or in advance via 0121 447 7671. Admission £10, £8 for over 60s and £6 other concessions. Free entry for under-12s.
