Jenny Walker

The Brass, Opera and Song concert at Artrix in November promises to provide something for everyone – and it’s also a great chance to hear the superb voice of award-winning soprano Jennifer Walker, who is in high demand as a soloist.

Jenny will be back on home turf for the concert – she was born in Birmingham and attended Lickey End First School, Catshill Middle and North Bromsgrove High School.

It was during her schooldays that she became involved in music, winning prizes at local festivals and appearing twice in the final of the Worcestershire Young Musician of the Year competition.

“I was always in the shows, from opera to pantomime,” says Jenny, who took singing lessons from the age of 12. “I then discovered that my voice was best suited to classical music, and trained seriously from about 15.”

Her talent won her a coveted place at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where she won almost every prize before graduating with the highest honours and completing a Masters in Music at the college, supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.

Jenny has remained in Wales, where she performs with the Welsh National Opera (WNO) and is a member of the BBC National Chorus of Wales. As a freelance singer, she performs at weddings and events as well as concerts and shows, and she also teaches singing both privately and at the prestigious Monkton Prep and Senior Schools in Bath.

Jenny is also involved in several projects aiming to make classical music and opera more accessible to youngsters – having helped to forge links between her college and local schools, she also works with WNO to get children – especially boys – interested in singing and songwriting.

“We try to work with kids who wouldn’t otherwise get much musical education,” she says. “I teach them how the voice works and get them to learn snippets from operas.”
Jenny will soon be coaching children for the BBC National Chorus of Wales’ Christmas Concert, and she’s also off to Holland for the International Vocal Competition as well as auditioning for next summer’s opera season.

“I made the reserve list for Glyndebourne last year, so I’m hoping to be chosen this time!” she says. “I don’t mind travelling – I’m happy to go where my career takes me.”

The Artrix concert takes place on Nov 22 at 7.30pm and Nov 23 at 3pm, with Bromsgrove Operatic Society singing Gilbert & Sullivan, Johann Strauss and Lionel Bart plus a selection from Les Miserables.

Absolute Brass, a four-piece band (one of whom is Jenny’s fiance!) offer contemporary brass chamber music and more traditional styles.

Tickets £9: call 0121 445 3120 or visit Artrix’s Box Office. For more info on Jenny, visit http://www.jenniferwalkersoprano.co.uk
