A visit from Henry

Henry and women

As part of the WI’s 100-year anniversary celebrations, eight local branches enjoyed a visit from none other than King Henry VIII, writes Keith Woolford.

Hosted by Blackwell & Burcot WI at a packed Burcot Village Hall, the audience was captivated by the very real presence of our second Tudor monarch – played with absolute conviction by performance historian John White – from the moment he entered the hall.

The King gave a full account of himself from early childhood through to his dissolution of the monasteries via the protracted divorce petition to the Pope.

Mr White perfectly captured the monarch’s archetypal stance and frame (even down to the gammy leg). His delivery would give Brian Blessed a run for his money!

Dressed to impress were several WI members as ladies-in-waiting and Henry’s wives, and the outgoing President Rae Fowler as Queen Elizabeth I.

While there was no boar’s head or mead to hand, members enjoyed wine, sandwiches and cake before retiring from court life for the evening.
