Alvechurch joined to Redditch?
Posted on September 23 2011 at 11:36:36 0 comments
Alvechurch will be sliced off the Bromsgrove parliamentary constituency and added to Redditch, if proposed boundary changes go ahead.
Despite being “obliged to take into account local government boundaries”, the Boundary Commission has recommended that the people of Alvechurch should be voting to elect an MP to represent Redditch.
Alvechurch Ward is within Bromsgrove District Council’s boundary and will remain so. These proposals are a cut-down version of those of the Electoral Reform Society reported in The Village last year.
Under those, Barnt Green, Lickey, Cofton Hackett and Finstall would also have found themselves in the Redditch constituency.
They were roundly condemned by Bromsgrove council leader Roger Hollingworth as being proposed by “people sitting in ivory towers in London looking at maps with no idea of what matters to local people”.
The Boundary Commission proposals are open for responses from the public until December 5.
It will be up to the commission to decide if the “evidence presented to us is such that it is appropriate to change our initial proposals.”
At the same time, the commission is under pressure to reduce the number of constituencies in England from 533 to 502 while, for the first time, also having to get similar numbers of voters into each one.
At the moment, constituencies range in size from 55,077 voters to 110,924.
