Alvechurch Parish Council round-up
Posted on September 22 2011 at 12:02:28 0 comments
The parish council is now up to its full complement after co-opting two new members at the September meeting.
Both from Alvechurch, they are Susan Lambert, a nurse, and retired lecturer Mary Green, with whom readers of The Village will already be familiar thanks to her Nature Diary.
* Clerk Yvonne Goode told the council that after years of asking they finally got the parking bays repainted outside the Village Hall on Bear Hill.
But she added: “We immediately had residents complaining that we had moved the disabled bay. We have also had a query whether the correct paperwork has gone through for moving the bay.”
* Building work on the old schools site had stirred trouble. “We had a number of complaints at the beginning of one week because they had been working on a Sunday, quite early, quite noisily and there had been some bad swear words,” said the clerk.
“One resident checked with Persimmon and it turned out the contractors aren’t supposed to even have been working on a Sunday,” she added.
* The council is hoping to get the crumbling wall around the memorial bench on the Village Green repaired in time for the Remembrance Day service there on November 11. But only one builder has quoted so far, the clerk said, adding: “The problem is builders aren’t that interested in putting in quotes for such a small amount of money.”
* New bunding has been built at Hopwood Community Centre in an effort to keep travellers off the playing fields. Including seeding, the cost was £1,600.
The clerk told councillors: “Considering the last lot of travellers cost us £1,500 anyway, I don’t think that is a bad investment.”
* The council heard that parish chairman John Cypher, who wasn’t present, is hoping to host a meeting of the sports clubs in Alvechurch parish to discuss their needs.
This is after Bromsgrove District Council pulled the plug on a £70,000 scheme to upgrade the playing fields at Hopwood and The Meadows.
* The council is hoping to make up for appearing like party poopers when it halted a Royal Wedding celebration in The Meadows this year by promoting a Diamond Jubilee event next year.
The clerk said: “Coun Cypher has suggested that as we didn’t celebrate in The Meadows this year, we could celebrate in The Meadows next year.”
Coun Adrian Smith said: “Perhaps we should send out a note to local clubs and organisations to see if they are interested in taking part in an event.”
