Early days of wind power in Hopwood

As villagers breathe a sigh of relief at the withdrawal of plans for a 330ft wind turbine rearing over Barnt Green, readers may be interested in a far less intrusive version installed at Hopwood in the 1950s.
The picture shows Bert Gillard surveying the windmill outside his caravan at Waterside Orchard in about 1953. It was supplied by his son Clive, a Village reader, who said: “The windmill charged 12-volt batteries to run a television.
“The aerial is positioned on the pole pointing towards the BBC mast at Sutton Coldfield.”
Clive said his father ran Gillards Radio and TV in Cotteridge from 1946 to 1996, when he died.
And if you look closely, you can just about see that his mobile home was called “Kilowatt Cottage”.
