Primrose Hospice in Bromsgrove has won two prestigious awards for its first-ever entry at the RHS Malvern Spring Festival.

The “Time is a Healer” garden, representing the hospice’s work with bereaved people and children in particular, picked up a Bronze Medal from the Royal Horticultural Society and was also voted the best show garden by the public in The People’s Choice Award.

Designed by the award-winning Martyn Wilson, of Wilson Associates Garden Design, and sponsored by a number of local businesses, the garden explored the journey travelled by those who have lost a loved one.

This was symbolised by the central “clock face” sculpture, with four exits enabling people to enter and exit the garden at a time that is right for them.

The planting represented the changing emotions of bereavement from periods of depression represented by dark foliage and flowers to a mixed palette of colours representing confused emotions – and a calming palette of greens and whites for those who reach peace and acceptance.

The central sculpture and benches crafted by local artists offered opportunities for discussion or quiet thought.

Helen Briscoe, Chief Executive of Primrose Hospice, commented, “We are all absolutely delighted with our awards, particularly as it is the first year we have taken part and the garden has certainly helped us to raise our profile.”
