Picnic

Alvechurch’s annual Picnic in the Park reaped the rewards of being held later in the year as record crowds basked in warm sunshine.

Fears that many families would be away for the Whitsun holiday week were unfounded as organisers reported the picnic’s takings, to be split between The Lounge and The Meadows, where the picnic is held, were £1,450 – that’s £350 more than last year.

Meanwhile, the stallholders are thought to have raised more than £5,000 for good causes.

The event, opened by treble-winning Alvechurch FC manager Ian Long and logo competition winner Eleanor Moody (left), included a go-kart race among new features, as well as the ever-popular dog show.

And after it was all over and everyone had gone home, Parish Lengthsman Ron Rand went around the fields to clear up the mess. . . and found just one empty crisp packet.

The new date was such a success that organisers have decided to go for the later May bank holiday again next year – Sunday May 27, 2018.
