Turbine ‘like Big Ben in backyard’

Barnt Green Parish Council has warned a proposed 330ft wind turbine close to the village centre would be like having “Big Ben in your backyard”.

It would also affect much of Lickey and Blackwell. Its rotors would probably be visible from Alvechurch.

Bromsgrove planning department is now considering the application for the 100 metre, 800kw turbine to be installed on land at Sandhills Green Farm.

The land is between the M42 and Sandhills Lane, around 300ft from the nearest home.

The application says the sound of the rotors turning is considered by some to be “soothing”.

Coun Susan Whitehand, of Barnt Green Parish Council, told The Village: ” We are committed to promoting the use of renewable energy resources.

“But a wind turbine higher than Big Ben a mere 150 metres from your home is not quite what many of us had in mind.”

Coun Whitehand said it was only 200 metres from a nursery and 550 metres from the primary school.

She pointed out that the Wind Turbines (Minimum Distances from Residential Premises) Bill going through Parliament proposes that if a wind turbine is between 50 and 100 metres in height then the minimum distance to residential properties should be 1,500 metres.

Residents across Barnt Green launched a campaign urging villagers to object to the plan, saying: “A turbine this size will dominate our village, be visible for miles and, if one is approved, may set a precedent for others.”

They hope Bromsgrove’s refusal to allow a 10.7 metre turbine in Lickey in August 2010 will be the precedent councillors will follow when considering this application.
